Outage Text Message FAQs

How do I sign up to receive texts?

No action is needed by you. GUC will automatically sign up all cell phone numbers in our billing system that are associated with electric customer accounts.

What types of text alerts will I receive?

Our outage text alert will send an initial outage notice, an update on crew status, and a notice once the outage is resolved.

How soon after an outage will I receive a text alert?

You will receive an outage alert as soon as we have reports that an outage in your area may affect you. These reports can be from customers or our systems.

How do I update my cell phone number?

Go to guc.com, login to Your Account, and update your User Profile. If you prefer, you can use the online website chat or call 252-752-7166 during regular business hours for assistance with updating your account.

How can I opt out of receiving outage text alerts?

You can opt out by replying STOP when you receive an outage alert text from GUC. However, it’s important to note that replying STOP will opt you out of ALL GUC alerts, including account billing reminders. If you only wish to opt out of outage text notifications, call 252-752-7166 Monday-Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

If I opt out, how can I reactivate my phone number to receive outage alerts via text?

You can resume receiving outage alerts on your cell phone by texting START on your mobile device to MYGUC (69482).

Is there a limit to the number of cell phone numbers I can register to receive outage text alerts?

Yes. Each customer account can accommodate one cell phone number.

Can I report an outage to GUC using the text alert on my cell phone?

At this time, GUC’s outage text notification system cannot receive messages other than STOP or START. If you are experiencing an outage, please call 1-855-767-2482.

Is there a fee for this service?

This is a free service that GUC is offering to keep you informed during outages. Message and data rates may apply. That means these texts could count toward your text plan with your mobile carrier, depending on your plan. If you have any questions with how this affects your mobile plan, contact your mobile carrier.
