GUC has an SMS text notification system designed to keep customers updated with important information.
The system is not set up for you to report outages - that can still be done through the online outage map or by calling the Emergency Hotline at 1-855-SOS-2-GUC (1-855-767-2482).
These messages will not ask for personal information. They will simply provide you with details about your service or your account which you may find helpful.

Types of Messages
Appointment Notifications
- Beat the Peak equipment installation appointments.
- Gas installation and appliance lighting or re-lighting appointments.
Customer Self-Service Notification Opt-Ins
- Notices about bill amounts, due dates, etc.
Outage Notifications
- Messages will include an initial alert soon after our system indicates there is an outage that affects you, a link to the outage map and estimated restoration times, a follow-up alert when crews have arrived at the affected service area, and a final message indicating power has been restored.

- These messages will not ask for personal information. They will simply let you know about outages and direct you to our online outage map for those who want more details.

Message frequency varies depending on the type of notification.
Never Miss a Text
If you’ve included your cell phone number on your GUC account, you will automatically be enrolled. Make sure your cell number is listed on your account by logging in to Your Account and updating the information under User Profile. You can also use our online chat or call 252-752-7166 during regular business hours to update your contact information.
Opting Out and Opting Back In
If you do not wish to receive these text messages, you have three options:
- Reply STOP to the welcome message. Note – this will stop ALL GUC-related text messages, including all reminders you have signed up for when managing your account online. To opt back in, text START to MYGUC (69482).
- Call 252-752-7166 during regular business hours and ask a customer service rep to remove you from the outage notifications. This will allow other texts, including account reminders, to continue. If you stopped the notifications by calling in, you can call back or use the online chat to let us know if you want to receive them once again.

You can text "HELP" for more information.
All customers with their cell phone numbers on their account will receive an initial opt-out message letting them know the service is active and letting them know how to opt-out if they choose. There is no charge from GUC for the service however, message and data charges from your cellular provider may apply. Carriers are not liable for delayed or undelivered messages.
SMS Privacy Policy
Under State law (North Carolina General Statute 132-1), the content of the GUC Alert program is public record and is “the property of the people.” The public may inspect, copy, and download public records and public information at no or minimal cost unless the law indicates otherwise.
During the use of the GUC Alert SMS program, some non-personal data concerning the user’s usage may be automatically collected. This information may include, but is not limited to, the following:
- The Internet domain and IP address from which this website was accessed
- The type of browser and operating system used to access this website
- The date, time, and length of the visit
- The web pages visited
- The website visited before this website
This information may be used to respond to inquiries, provide a specific service to the user, or enhance the user’s experience to this program. GUC does not sell this information to any third parties. This information is managed in accordance with North Carolina General Statute 132-1.
GUC does not collect any personal information from children.
