Fireworks Safety: Keep Away from Powerlines

Published on: 06/24/26

As the Independence Day holiday approaches, it is important to remember to keep personal fireworks displays away from powerlines.

If fireworks meet the lines, it can cause a fire, power outage, and possibly injuries. Also, don’t use pad-mounted electrical equipment as a firework launchpad.

Should a firework accidentally come in contact with an overhead power line, call 1-855-SOS-2GUC (1-855-767-2482) and 911 immediately.

If you want to shoot off fireworks, do it in an open area away from powerlines.

More tips from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission on staying safe when using fireworks:

  • Keep all spectators at least 20 feet away from where the fireworks are ignited.
  • Never point or throw fireworks at another person.
  • Never allow young children to play with or ignite fireworks.
  • Never place any part of your body directly over a firework when lighting the fuse.
  • Immediately back up to a safe distance after lighting fireworks.
  • Light fireworks one at a time.
  • Never try to re-light or pick up fireworks that have not ignited fully.
  • Always keep a bucket of water or a garden hose nearby.
  • After fireworks complete their burning, put out the firework with water before discarding it to prevent a trash fire.
  • Never light or shoot fireworks off in metal or glass containers.
