GUC Celebrates Smart Energy Provider Week (February 9-13)

Published on: 02/05/26

Greenville Utilities earned the Smart Energy Provider (SEP) designation from the American Public Power Association for demonstrating a commitment to and proficiency in energy efficiency, distributed generation, and environmental initiatives that support the goal of providing safe, reliable, low-cost, and sustainable electric service.

The SEP designation, which lasts for three years (December 1, 2024, to November 30, 2027), recognizes public power utilities for demonstrating leading practices in four key disciplines: smart energy program structure; energy efficiency and distributed energy resources programs; environmental and sustainability initiatives; and customer experience. GUC joins 125 public power utilities (out of more than 2,000 nationwide) that hold the SEP designation.

GUC’s robust programming around being a smart energy provider earned the APPA Smart Energy Provider designation.

Those programs include:

LED Light Conversion Program: Over the past five years GUC has converted all of its streetlights to LED in an effort to become more energy efficient. Learn more about the LED Light Conversion Program and other environmental initiatives.

Diesel & Natural Gas Generator Conversions: Converting from diesel to natural gas reduces CO2 output by 28.6%. By doing this, GUC reduced CO2 emissions by 112 tons in 2024. Read our Clean Future report.

Beat the Peak: Beat the Peak is a residential load management program that reduced energy use by 1M kWh in 2024. It also reduced CO2 emissions by 288 tons in 2024. Read our Clean Future report.

Smart Thermostat Pilot Program: This program is a peak shaving system that uses customers’ smart thermostats instead of peak shaving devices, such as the Beat the Peak device. Its estimated annual reduction of CO2 is 2.5 tons. Currently, there are 261 customers enrolled.

Community Solar: Community Solar is a program where solar energy is generated from one location and shared by multiple subscribers. This allows subscribers to get the benefits of solar without having to install their own rooftop or ground panels. The Community Solar Farm will help reduce emissions by approximately 53 tons of CO2. Learn more about Community Solar.

Energy Services: Since 1977, GUC’s Energy Services Office has offered helpful, reliable energy savings information. Customers can call for assistance on a variety of energy-related matters. Electric Vehicle Charger Rebates: In 2018, GUC began a pilot program to offer rebates to customers who install electric vehicle charging stations. Businesses, educational institutions, multi-family dwellings, non-profits, and governments are all eligible to apply. Click here to learn more about the Electric Vehicle Charger Rebates.
