GUC Board/Management Weatherize Customer's Home

On Saturday, February 11, Greenville Utilities Commissioners and Management headed out on a cold, rainy morning to assist a customer in weatherizing her home. The weatherization effort was part of GUC’s EnergyWise program. The program aims to educate the public on how to gain control of energy usage through workshops, advertising, presentations, and other methods.

“It’s our hope activities like this effort will spur civic groups and church congregations to join us in helping families lower their bills through weatherization,” said Ron Elks, General Manager/CEO of Greenville Utilities.

The group, which included seven Commissioners, eight Management Team members and three GUC support staffers, spent the morning caulking around windows and doors, weatherstripping, insulating receptacles and a water heater, and cleaning and replacing filters.

“The home was in desperate need of caulking,” said GUC Board Chair Wayne Powell. “When we arrived you could feel the strong drafts throughout the home.”

“The wind chill effect in the home was causing the family to really turn up the heat,” said Jim Rapin, Energy Services Officer. “Now, with fewer drafts and a little behavior modification to set the thermostat lower, the family could see a savings on their utility bill.”

Greenville Utilities urges groups and individuals to identify and help neighbors who need assistance in weatherizing their homes. Those interested in knowing more about weatherization projects and GUC’s EnergyWise program can call GUC at 551-1525.

The following GUC Board members participated in the project: Wayne Powell, Bryant Kittrell, Faye Taylor, Wayne Bowers, Chuck Weeks, Lynn Evans and Buddy Zincone. GUC management/staff participants included Ron Elks, Janet Drinnon, Richard Corbi, Keith Jones, Sandy Barnes, Roger Jones, Randy Emory, Anthony Miller, Jim Rapin, Vondarick Roach and Scott Mullis. GUC Employees Tim Siders, Thomas Culver, Irwin Stron and Mike Carmon also assisted with needed repairs.
