Protect Your Water Pipes
The onset of a bitter cold snap may mean inconvenience and added expense if you’re not prepared – especially where water pipes at home are concerned. There is danger of pipes bursting when temperatures change rapidly, leaving you with a wet, soggy, expensive mess. Greenville Utilities recommends the following safeguards to protect water pipes during a cold spell:
• Insulate pipes that are exposed to outside temperatures.
• Close all foundation vents under the house.
• Open cabinets under sinks to let warm air circulate there.
• Never leave a house or building with pipes unheated during freezing temperatures unless all water lines, drains and toilets have been properly drained.
If a water line breaks, it is important to shut off the valve within your house or at the meter. For emergency assistance in turning off the water, call Greenville Utilities at 752-7166 during regular business hours and 752- 5627 after hours.
