Wastewater Treatment Plant

Wastewater Treatment Plant

Our Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) is responsible for removing debris, solid material and pollutants from the water entering the facility, and then filtering and disinfecting it before it is returned to theĀ Tar River. The plant has been in operation since 1985. Built with a capacity of 10.5 million gallons a day (mgd), it was upgraded in 1995 to a state-of-the art facility and now has the capacity to treat 17.5 mgd. The WWTP staff treats an average of 10.54 million gallons of wastewater per day (more than 3.85 billion gallons a year) and produces a stream of highly-treated water (effluent) that is safe to return to the river.

Tours of the Wastewater Treatment Plant are available. Last year, 449 peopleĀ toured the Plant. Our staff is also available to visit schools, civic groups, and clubs to share information about what we do. Call 551-1546 for more information.
