Tony Cannon Elected to APPA Board of Directors

Tony Cannon, Greenville Utilities’ General Manager/CEO, has been elected to the Board of Directors of the American Public Power Association (APPA), a national organization that provides a range of services and representation for publicly-owned electric utilities. The election took place June 17th during APPA’s National Conference in Denver, Colorado.  Cannon has previously served as Chair of the APPA Economic Development Committee and Chair of the Customer Connections Conference Committee. 

The American Public Power Association plays a key role in advocating federal policies that serve the consumer interest in every state of the nation, as well as promoting the highest standards and best practices among its membership.

Cannon has served as GUC’s General Manager/CEO since 2012 after having served as Assistant General Manager and Chief Operating Officer since 2006. He has 29 years of experience in public utilities, including management of electric, water, sewer and natural gas operations. Prior to joining GUC, he was Energy Manager at Greer Commission of Public Works in South Carolina.

In addition to service on the APPA Board, Cannon is past-chair and currently serves on the Board of Directors and Executive Committee of the Pitt-Greenville Chamber of Commerce and the Board of Trustees for the Pitt County Committee of 100 Cannon is involved with numerous other professional and civic organizations. He is also past chair of the Carolina’s Public Gas Association. 

“I’m honored to have been elected to serve on the American Public Power Association board and advocate for the interests of our customers and millions of other people around the country served by not-for-profit electric systems,” said Cannon. “I hope to make a meaningful contribution to the Board and to be a strong advocate for public power systems.”

Based in Washington, D.C., APPA is the national service organization for the nation’s more than 2,000 community- and state-owned not-for-profit electric utilities serving 46 million customers.
