Since 2001, Greenville Utilities has offered the Natural Gas Rate Lock-In Program to help customers protect their budgets from the “ups and downs” of the natural gas market. At the time, gas prices were extremely volatile and increases or decreases of more than 300% were not unusual. GUC now purchases all natural gas on the open market, and our natural gas purchasing policy has allowed for long-term planning, with purchases being made several months into the future when prices are favorable. As a result, we have been successful in increasing rate stability and preventing major rate hikes, essentially making the Natural Gas Rate Lock-In Program unnecessary.

Since it will not likely offer tangible benefits to our customers at this time, we are suspending the Natural Gas Rate Lock-In Program, effective October 1, 2009.

Enrollment for customers who signed up in 2008 will expire on September 30, 2009. At that time their natural gas rate will automatically revert to the standard rate. Click here for GUCs current rates. 

GUC will evaluate conditions yearly to determine if it will be beneficial to customers to reinstate the program. If conditions change, a recommendation will be presented to the Board of Commissioners. If you have any questions about the Natural Gas Rate Lock-In Program, please contact 551-1587.
