What is Operation Spring Clean?

Operation Spring Clean is a preventive maintenance program to ensure that GUC customers continue to receive high quality water. Operation Spring Clean will begin March 22nd through Friday, June 19th.  During the 13-week program, all 628 miles of water distribution lines on GUC’s system will be cleaned. The program involves flushing pipes with high velocities of water through fire hydrants. 
 

When will flushing be conducted?

To minimize inconvenience for customers, flushing will be conducted Sundays through Fridays from 10 p.mm to 6 a.m. on a schedule that rotates through our entire service area over the course of 13 weeks, March 22 through June 19.
 

How can I find out when my neighborhood will be done?

GUC will publish weekly notices in The Daily Reflector with maps of the areas being cleaned that week. We will also post the information here, and on our Twitter and Facebook pages. The information will also be on GTV.
 

What can I expect?

During Operation Spring Clean, you may see water coming from fire hydrants with force and water flowing in the streets. While your service area is being flushed, you may experience temporary periods of low water pressure. You may also notice brown or discolored water. This is temporary and does not post any health risk.
 

Is the water safe to drink?

Yes. The flushing process poses no health risks to the drinking water.
 

Can I do laundry during Operation Spring Clean?

GUC advises that you avoid washing clothes until the water runs clear at your home.
 

If I notice discolored water, what should I do?

We recommend turning on the cold water faucet in the bathtub and running the water for 5 to 10 minutes. This should clear up any discolored water.
 

Why does the water look funny after hydrant flushing?

When a hydrant is opened, there will always be temporary incidences of discolored water containing fine sediment particles. There is no health hazard associated with discolored water. Allow a few hours for discoloration to dissipate. To verify the water has settled, allow your cold water tap to run a few minutes.
 

What should I do if my water pressure or volume seems low after flushing?

Check your faucet and washer screens for trapped debris.
 

Doesn't this flushing operation waste water?

To clean the pipes effectively, water must be discharged from the fire hydrants with sufficient speed and volume. The flow is stopped as soon as the water is clear so that only the amount needed to clean the system is released into the street. Safety, regulatory, and logistical considerations prevent us from capturing this water for reuse.
 

What should I do if my water is still discolored after the system flush is complete and I’ve done everything you recommend?
