  • The NCAMES (North Carolina Association of Municipal Electric Systems) Conference and Lineman's Rodeo was held in Newton, NC on May 19. The GUC Journeyman team (workers with more than four years experience) was comprised of Overhead Lineworkers Keith Gaskins, Connie McGowan and Underground Electric Crew Leader Kevin Willoughby. Overhead Lineworkers Jeremy Page, Chris Scott and Calvin Whitehead competed in the Apprentice division. Keith placed second place overall and Connie came in thir place overall in the Apprentice division.  (5/10)

  • Jonathan Britt, Gas Systems Engienner; John Little, GIS Manager; and David Springer, Water Resources Plants Engineer, recently graduated from the Greenville-Pitt County Chamber of Commerce Leadership Institute. The program is sponsored by the Chamber to develop community leaders. (5/10)

  • Greenville Utilities was recently awarded the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) for our 2009 comprehensive annual financial report (CAFR). The Certificate of Achievement is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting, and its attainment represents a significant accomplishment by GUC and the Finance Department. Our annual financial report was judged by an impartial panel to meet the high standards of the program which include demonstrating a constructive "spirit of full disclosure" to clearly communicate our financial story.   • GUC was awarded NC Department of Labor (NCDOL) Safety Awards recently. Every division of Greenville Utilities received this honor. (3/10)

  • GUC received two awards from The National Safety Council. The first recognized GUC’s outstanding 2009 lost work day incident rate (LWDI). Our LWDI qualified us for the Safety Improvement and Occupational Excellence Achievement Awards. This award goes to employers with a 20% or greater reduction in their LWDI. GUC’s 2009 rate is more than 60% lower than our 2008 rate. We also received the Occupational Excellence Achievement Award, which recognizes employers with a LWDI that is 50% or less of their industries' average. The U.S. Utility Industry had a combined average rate of 1.1 lost work day incidents per 100 full time employees. Our LWDI rate is 0.24 per 100 full time employees. (3/10)

  • A team of employees from the Electric Department represented Greenville Utilities at the American Public Power Association’s Public Power Lineworkers’ Rodeo, March 26-27, in Omaha, Nebraska. Forty teams from around the country competed. The rodeo is a series of competitive events demonstrating the safe work practices that lineworkers use in their jobs every day.

    Because of their outstanding performance at the 2009 NCAMES (North Carolina Association of Municipal Electric Systems) rodeo held in Greenville last May, Ryan Hardee and Kevin Willoughby competed with other top NCAMES winners. Together, they took 1st Place in the 600 Amp Changeout, 3rd Place in the Lightning Arrestor Changeout & 3rd Place in the Recloser Event.

    The GUC team consisted of Mark Howery, Keith Gaskins and Mike Harper from the City of New Bern. They placed 2nd Place in the Lightning Arrestor Changeout & 3rd Place in the 600 Amp Changeout. Jeremy Page and Calvin Whitehead also competed as apprentices. (4/10)

  • Equipment Operators from the Water Resources Department competed at the EWWN (Eastern Water & Wastewater Network) Backhoe Rodeo on April 23th in Rocky Mount. Equipment Operators Paul Bridges, Lester Roach, Michael Silverthorne, Brian Murray and Dean Roberson represented GUC in the rodeo. Brian took first place in the Pipe & Pail competition. Competitors had to pick up a bucket of water with the teeth of their backhoe and place it into a piece of pipe without spilling any water. Brian placed second in the Slam Dunk competition in which he had to scoop up balls and place them in trash cans.The EWWN is a non-profit organization that fosters sharing ideas and resources in the water and wastewater industry in eastern North Carolina. Operators from throughout our region participated in the rodeo. (4/10)

  • Training Officer Carol Bazemore was recently elected Treasurer of the Eastern North Carolina Chapter of the American Society for Training and Development (ASTD). The mission of ASTD is to meet the needs of professionals who work in the fields of professional development, leadership, networking, fellowship and research. The group meets monthly and includes members from Raleigh to the eastern shore. (2/10)

  • Greenville Utilities was awarded the Employee Spirit Award from the United Way of North Carolina. This is the third year in a row that GUC has received Spirit of North Carolina Awards in recogition of its ourstanding United Way campaigns. (2/10)

  • Roger Jones, Director of Electric Systems, was elected President of the North Carolina One Call Center (NCOCC) for 2010.  He has served as the Board’s Vice-President of Operations for the past two years and prior to that as the Board’s Vice-President for Finance.   • Howard Corey, Engineering Support Manager in GUC’s Water Resources Department, was recently honored by the North Carolina American Water Works Association and Water Environment Association with the 2009 Golden Manhole Award. This award recognizes those individuals who are significant contributors to the advancement of the Systems Design, Education, Training, Certification, Construction, Operations, Maintenance and Management of Water Distribution Systems or Wastewater Collection Systems. Howard has been active for many years in the NC AWWA-WEA, most notably as an Instructor involved in training water and wastewater system workers across North Carolina, and it is fitting that he should receive this award for his long and dedicated service to the NC AWWA-WEA.   • Greenville hosted the 48th Annual NCAMES (North Carolina Association of Municipal Electric Systems) Conference and Lineman’s Rodeo at the Convention Center May 18 – 21. The Rodeo was the highlight of the Conference. Teams from municipal electric systems from around the state come to compete in events that test their ability to perform tasks safely and quickly. GUC employees volunteer to participate in the Rodeo. This year, the GUC Journeyman team (workers with more than four years experience) was comprised of Overhead Lineworkers Keith Gaskins, Ryan Hardee and Underground Electric Crew Leader Kevin Willoughby. Overhead Lineworkers Jeremy Page and Connie McGowan along with Tree Trimmer Calvin Whitehead competed in the Apprentice division.

    Both journeyman and apprentice participants competed in the Hurt Man Rescue event where they simulate helping an injured co-worker to the ground from atop a utility pole. The other events change every year. A written test and an obstacle course event rounded out the Apprentice competition. The Journeyman teams had two additional events. In the Lightning Arrester Change Out event, competitors change out two lightning arresters (a device used protect the insulation on the system from lightning damage) on a pole. The other Journeyman event was the 100 Amp Switch Change Out.

    The GUC team performed very well. Connie got the highest score on the Apprentice division written test. He also came in first in the Hurt Man Rescue event and 3rd place overall in his division. Ryan finished in 2nd place overall and Kevin came in 4th place overall. Ryan and Kevin (along with the other top four winners) will represent NCAMES at the national APPA(American Public Power Association) next spring in Omaha, Nebraska. (5/09)

  • Greenville Utilities is one of 60 of the nation’s more than 2,000 public power utilities to earn Reliable Public Power ProviderTM (RP3) recognition from the American Public Power Association (APPA). This designation honors utilities for providing customers with the highest degree of reliable and safe electric service. The RP3 designation recognizes public power utilities that demonstrate proficiency in four key disciplines: reliability, safety, training and system improvement.  Criteria within each category are based on sound business practices and represent a utility-wide commitment to safe and reliable delivery of electricity.   • A number of Greenville Utilities' work groups received Gold or Silver Safety Awards by the North Carolina Department of Labor in recognition of our 2008 safety excellence on April 14th. These awards are presented to employers who maintain safety incidence rates significantly below the average for their industry. At GUC, we value the safety of our customers and employees in everything we do. (4/09)

  • A team of five Equipment Operators from GUC's Water Resources Department showed off their skills at the EWWN (Eastern Water & Wastewater Network) Backhoe Rodeo on April 24th in Rocky Mount. Participants compete in events designed to showcase the skill and precision they must use in their daily work. Equipment  Michael Silverthorne took first place in the Ball and Cone competition. Paul Bridges finished first place in the Pick and Roll competition and second place in the Egg Roll competition. He finished third place overall, just two points behind second place. Brian Murray, Lester Roach and Dean Roberson also competed in the rodeo. The EWWN is a non-profit organization that fosters sharing ideas and resources in the water and wastewater industry in eastern North Carolina.  (4/09)

  • Two Wastewater Treatment Plant Operators recently passed certification exams.  Julius Phillips passed his Grade II certification. Bryan Bland passed his Grade IV certification, the highest level of certification offered.The exams were administered by the Water Pollution Control System Operators Certification Commission.   • GUC's investment policy received the Certificate of Excellence Award from the Association of Public Treasurers of the United States & Canada (APT US&C). To become certified, GUC's investment policy was submitted for peer review by the APT US&C Investment Policy Certification Committee. This committee reviews the policies in 18 different areas and approval must be unanimous for certification. (3/09)

  • Greenville Utilities, a longtime supporter and partner of United Way of Pitt County, received two awards from the United Way of North Carolina. GUC was presented the Employee Spirit Award and the Corporate Spirit Award. This is the second year in a row GUC has received these awards. The Spirit of North Carolina Awards for Campaign Excellence is sponsored annually by United Way of North Carolina. Spirit awards were developed to recognize companies and their employees that demonstrate campaign excellence and community commitment. Organizations and companies were judged on a variety of criteria, including leadership giving, volunteerism, employee participation and giving levels, year-round education, corporate support, incentive programs, and campaign rallies.   • The Greenville Utilities Wastewater Treatment Plant was named the recipient of the 2008 Burke Safety Award. This award is presented by the North Carolina American Water Works Association and the North Carolina Water Environment Association (NC AWWA-WEA) AWWA-WEA to wastewater treatment plants and their collection systems. It was established in 1982 in honor of George W. Burke, Jr. for his many years of service to the water pollution control field. The award is given every year to encourage an active and effective safety program in municipal and industrial water and wastewater facilities. Safety programs and safety records of the facility are the primary criteria for the awards. (12/08)

  • Troy Perkins, Superintendent of Water/Sewer Systems, was honored as the Wastewater Collection Operator of the Year at the North Carolina American Water Works Association and the recent North Carolina Water Environment Association (NC AWWA-WEA) Annual Conference this month. The NC AWWA-WEA Board of Education and Examiners gives this award to an individual who has contributed much to the successful operation and maintenance of sewage collection systems.   • Julius Patrick, Water Treatment Plant Operator III at Greenville Utilities, received the A Surface Certified Operator of the Year Award. He was presented the award at the recent NC Waterworks Operators Association (NCWOA) annual meeting in Raleigh. Click here for more details. (10/08)

  • GUC's Gas System was recently honored with the Safety Management Excellence Award from the American Public Gas Association. The award was presented at the APGA Annual Conference and is given to the public gas system that has consistently operated at the highest levels, clearly establishing itself as an achiever of excellence in the field of Safety Management. The award was given based on three components: effective or innovative aspects of GUC’s safety program, safety accomplishments and successful safety programs. (09/08)

  • GUC's gas system is inspected each year by the Department of Transportation Office of Pipeline Safety to ensure that we comply with the safety requirements for transportation and operation of pipeline facilities in the United States. All aspects of operating a natural gas distribution system are required to comply, including engineering, construction, new service installation and maintenance of the facility. For the fifth consecutive year, there were no violations found during the recent inspection. (8/08)

  • Water Resources employees Eddie Brock (Engineering Coordinator), Howard Corey (Engineering Support Manager) and Troy Perkins (Superintendent of Water/Sewer Systems) taught classes at the North Carolina American Water Works Association and the North Carolina Water Environment Association (AWWA/WEA) Collection & Distribution School in Morganton, NC.  Troy coordinated the section for Grade IV Collections. He also taught Testing Collection Systems for Acceptance, Records, and Public Relations. (8/08)

  • Scott Mullis, Credit Supervisor in the Customer Relations Department, recently completed the requirements to become a certified Key Accounts Manager through the APPA (American Public Power Association) Key Accounts Certificate Program. To earn this distinction, Scott attended classes, passed written and oral exams and submitted a business and marketing plan. (7/08)

  • Two Water Resources Department employees recently passed exams given by the North Carolina Water Pollution Control System Operators Certification Commission. Greg Lyons, I/I Crew Leader, passed the Collection System Operator III exam and John Fairbanks, Maintenance Crew Leader on our sewer cleaning truck, passed the Operator II exam. (7/08)

  • Patrice Alexander, Director of Human Resources; Jay Gamble, Gas Systems Engineer; and Kim Coggins, Transaction Analyst in Customer Relations, recently graduated from the Greenville-Pitt County Chamber of Commerce Leadership Institute. The program is sponsored by the Chamber to develop community leaders. Scott Mullis, Credit Supervisor, is a graduate of the program and serves on the Steering Committee. (6/08)

  • The 11th Annual NCAMES (North Carolina Association of Municipal Electric Systems) Lineman’s Rodeo was held at the Lowes Motor Speedway in Concord on April 29th. Overhead Lineworkers Connie McGowan, Keith Gaskins, Billy Owens and Keith Stancil represented GUC. Teams from municipal electric systems from around the state come to compete in events, which vary from year to year. The events test their ability to perform tasks safely and quickly. Both journeyman and apprentice participants compete in the Hurt Man Rescue event where they simulate helping an injured co-worker to the ground from atop a utility pole. Connie McGowan earned 1st Place in the Apprentice Division of this competition. Billy Owens came in 2nd Place Overall in the Apprentice Division. Keith Gaskins won 1st Place in the journeyman Egg Climb competition. This event required him to climb a utility pole with a raw egg in his mouth, place it in a hanging bag at the top of the pole, climb down to the ground, retrieve the basket with an expandable pole and place the unbroken egg in a container. Keith Stancil came in 6th Place Overall. (4/08)

  • Greenville Utilities recently received North Carolina Department of Labor (NC DOL) Gold and Silver Awards Safety Awards. The NC DOL Gold Award is presented to employers with lost and restricted workdays significantly below their industry’s average. We received this nine gold awards on April 29th at the annual Safety Awards banquet, sponsored by the Greenville-Pitt County Chamber of Commerce and the NC DOL. One department received the Silver Award for lost workdays considerably below the industry average. The NC DOL safety awards program began in 1946 to provide an incentive to employers and employees to maintain a safe and healthful workplace. (4/08)

  • Two Equipment Operators in the Water Resources Department, each earned first place trophies in the EWWN (Eastern Water & Wastewater Network) Backhoe Rodeo held on April 25th, in Rocky Mount. The rodeo gives employees from the eastern region of the state an opportunity to showcase the skills they use in the jobs each day. Paul Bridges won the "Egg Roll" competition. Using only the teeth of the backhoe bucket, the egg must be moved about 3' without breaking the egg. Michael Silverthorne had the fastest time in the "Ball and Cone" competition. During this event, different color balls must be knocked of cones without touching or knocking over the cone, using backhoe teeth that were color-coded to match the balls.  (4/08)

  • The team representing the North Carolina Association of Municipal Electric Systems (NCAMES) won first place in national Public Power Lineworkers’ Rodeo on April 19 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway . The winning team included GUC’s Keith Gaskins and Mark Howery, along with Mike Harper of New Bern and Jody Kiser of Gastonia.  The rodeo is sponsored each year by the American Public Power Association.   • Greenville Utilities has been a long time supporter of the United Way of Pitt County, and on February 8th they recognized for doing it with excellence.   • Ron Elks, General Manager/CEO, was recently elected to the ElectriCities Board of Directors. He was sworn in on January 25, 2008. The 14-member Board of Directors advises and directs the activities and policies for North Carolina Municipal Power Agency Number One (NCMPA1), North Carolina Eastern Municipal Power Agency (NCEMPA), and ElectriCities, an organization that represents cities, towns and universities that own their electric distribution systems. Greenville Utilities is a member of ElectriCities, along with more than 90 other members in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.  (1/08)

  • Roger Jones, Director of Electric Systems, was recently elected as the Vice President of Operations for the NC One-Call Center (NCOCC) Board of Directors. Jones formerly served as the Board’s Vice President of Finance. The North Carolina One-Call Center provides information about the location of utility lines to avoid costly and dangerous accidents.   • Howard Corey, Engineering Support Manager in the Water Resources Department, was presented with the Raymond E. (Red) Ebert Award at the North Carolina American Water Works Association and Water Environment Association (NC AWWA-WEA) Annual Conference on December 4. This award was established by the NC AWWA-WEA Board in 1988 and is presented to an individual who has made a significant contribution to the practice of operating a water distribution or wastewater collection system, specifically for demonstrating organizational leadership, technical innovation, facility improvement, or promoting and/or participating in training, safety awareness and general knowledge that has led to the upgrading and advancement of the water distribution and/or wastewater collection systems.   • Patrice Alexander, Human Resources Director, recently attained the International Public Management Associations for Human Resources’ Certified Professional (IPMA-CP) designation.  Patrice met the professional standards set by the Public Human Resource Certification Council to earn this credential.   • Rick Langley, Water Treatment Plant Superintendent, was elected North Carolina Waterworks Operator Association (NCWOA) President. He has been a member of NCWOA for 22 years and has served as the NCWOA Education Committee Chair, Board of Examiners Chair and Vice President. He was the Association’s “Operator of the Year Award” in 2006. (9/07)

  • Barrett Lasater, Plants Manager, was awarded the Gino Abessinio Vocational Service Award on May 21st for his work leading Water Resources staff during our two-year struggle with lead in drinking water. “Although this award was given to me, it really belongs to the entire Water Resources staff. This was truly a team effort,” said Barrett. The Greenville Noon Rotary Club gives this award annually to recognize outstanding accomplishments in a community member’s work life. This is the second time the award has recognized Greenville Utilities. After the floods that followed Hurricane Floyd in 1999, the award was presented to all GUC employees. (5/07)

The GUC Journeyman team (workers with more than four years experience) was comprised of Troubleshooter Crew Leader Mark Howery and Overhead Lineworkers Keith Gaskins and Earl Harris. Overhead Lineworker Billy Owens competed in the Apprentice division. Keith placed first in two events and took second place overall. Mark came in fourth place overall. Keith and Mark, along with the other two top finishers will represent NCAMES at the national APPA (American Public Power Association) rodeo next spring in Indianapolis. (5/07)

  • Andy Yakim, Energy Services Supervisor, was one of the recipients of the 2007 Environmental Awareness Award given by the City of Greenville Environmental Advisory Commission (EAC). He was recognized for GUC's E-300 energy efficient construction program. The Environmental Awareness Award was created to recognize individuals or groups who have made a significant impact of our environment by demonstrating personal responsibility and taking the initiative to protect and conserve ou natural resources.   • Electric Department employees Mark Howery, Keith Gaskins and Ryan Hardee represented GUC at the 2007 Public Power Lineworkers' Rodeo on April 13-14 in Marietta, GA. They joined fifty-eight teams from public power utilities from across the nation. They achieved perfect scores for safety and technique and finished in 10th place overall. (4/07)

  • Water Resources Equipment Operators Mike SIlverthorne, Dean Roberson, Paul Bridges and Lester Roach represented Greenville Utilities in the Eastern Water & Wastewater Network's (EWWN) Annual Backhoe Rodeo in Rocky Mount on April 27. Paul earned first place in two events. (4/07)

  • GUC Gas Department employees Frankie Robins, John Sheppard, Ralph Langley and Glen Crumpler competed in rodeo events at the Southern Gas Association (SGA) Conference and Expo in Charlotte. Frankie and John finished third in the meter building competition, just one second behind the second place team. Ralph and Glen finished fourth in another event. (3/07)

  • Andy Yakim, Energy Services Supervisor, recently presented information at two Pitt Community College sessions as part of the North Carolina Sustainable Design Competition. He was also invited to join the Awards Selection Committee for the State Energy Office’s Leadership in Sustainable Energy Awards. Last year, GUC was awarded the Sustainable Energy Champion Award for our E-300 Home Program which promotes energy efficient construction. (2/07)

  • George Reel, Customer Service/Billing Supervisor, received the "2006 Business Award" from the Pitt County and North Carolina Chapter of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). George received the award "in recognition of outstanding service in providing assistance to low-income families and the elderly, having an open door policy and making himself accessible to the community."   • Sandy Barnes, IT Director, graduated from the 2006 Chief Information Officers Certification (CIO) Program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The program is the first of its kind in the nation and is designed for local government IT Directors to focus on how technology impacts organizations. The course was 240 hours and included topics like strategic technology planning, communication, project management, emerging trends, leadership, security, etc. Sandy was one of 28 public sector technology professionals who completed the course this year.   • Ron Elks, General Manager/CEO, was presented "Life Membership" in the N.C. Waterworks Operators Association at their annual meeting held in September.

  • Rick Langley, Water Treatment Plant Superintendent, received the Operator of the Year Award “for outstanding ability and devotion to the art and science of water supply and purification.” This award is given by the NC Waterworks Operators Association (NCWOA) to recognize individuals for outstanding performance, professionalism and contributions to the water treatment profession. Selection criteria include professional growth and continuing education, new ideas or improvements developed for an existing facility and the ability to serve the best interest of the community. The NCWOA supports professional growth and education for North Carolina waterworks professionals. (9/06)

  • Freddie Martin, Industrial Services Coordinator at Greenville Utilities’ Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP), received the North Carolina Pretreatment Professionals Honor Roll award.  This award is given annually by the Pretreatment, Emergency Response and Collections System (PERCS) Unit of the North Carolina Division of Water Quality to recognize an individual or program that exhibits consistent attention to detail in the administration of their Pretreatment Program.   • Our Gas Department received the AGA 2005 Industry Leader Accident Prevention Award. This award is given by the American Gas Association to recognize companies that have achieved a total OSHA recordable injury and illness incident rate below the industry average for their company size and sector of the natural gas industry.  In 2005, there were no recordable injuries in the Gas Department.   • Several Departmental Sections at Greenville Utilities celebrated the safety accomplishment of working at least 100,000 man hours without a lost/restricted work day injury between January 1, 2001 and December 31, 2005. The Gas Department and Information Technology Departments achieved this distinction, as well as the Garage, Water Resources Engineering, Electric Engineering, Water Treatment Plant and Wastewater Treatment Plant.   • Jay Gamble, Gas System Engineer; James Edwards, Meter Supervisor; and Freddie Martin, Industrial Services Coordinator at the Wastewater Treatment Plant completed the requirements to become a certified Key Accounts Managers through the American Public Power Association. To earn this distinction, they attended classes, passed written and oral exams and each submitted a business and marketing plan. The Key Accounts program is designed to provide personalized care to retain and nurture long term relationships with GUC’s key account customers. They join Electric Engineering Planner John Worrell and CIS Administrator Becky Pope, who became certified earlier this year. (4/06)

  • Keith Jones, Director of Financial Services and Accounting, was appointed to the North Carolina Capital Management Trust Region I Advisory Board. The Trust manages $4.1 billion in cash investments for N.C. Local Governments. (3/06)

  •  Greenville Utilities was awarded the North Carolina Leadership in Sustainable Energy Award on March 29, 2006 at the State Energy Conference in Raleigh. The North Carolina State Energy Office issues this award. Click here to read more about the award. The E-300 Home Program has been promoting energy efficient construction for last 28 years. This award program for residential and light commercial structures sets the standard for energy efficiency in the community.   • Steve Porter, PE, Water/Sewer Systems Engineer, has been elected to the Board of Directors of the Southeast Society for Trenchless Technology (SESTT). This organization seeks to advance the science and practice of Trenchless Technology through education, training, study and research, and information sharing. Trenchless Technology is used to service, renovate and replace existing utility services underground without digging trenches. This allows work to be done with a minimum amount of damage to sidewalks, roads and customers’ lawns. (2/06)

  • GUC was recently honored at a "Winners' Circle" celebration by the United Way of Pitt County for the success of our 2005 Pacesetter Campaign. GUC received a “2005 Top Performance Award” in recognition of having achieved the largest percent increase in the Public Service Division of the campaign. GUC was also presented with the “Outstanding Employee Campaign – 2005 Chairman’s Award.” This top honor is given only to a few organizations each year. GUC also received a plaque for serving as a Pacesetter Organization. (1/06)
