Winter Energy Tips
  • If your home has a heat pump with auxiliary electric heat “strips,” do not adjust the thermostat daily. Find your lowest comfortable setting (The Dept. of Energy recommends 68 degrees or lower), and set it and forget it.
  • For all heating systems - every degree you lower the thermostat below 68, can save you around 7% (per degree) of the operating costs. Every degree above 68 degrees will increase your costs by about 7% per degree.
  • Check and clean or replace your central heating filter(s) once each month. Keeping clean filters in the system can save as much as 10-15% of the operating costs.
  • Check your ducts for air leaks.  Look for joints that should be connected but have separated. Leaky duct work can increase your utility bill significantly.
  • Weatherize your home. Caulking, sealing and weather stripping around all your windows, outside doors or where plumbing, duct work and electrical wiring penetrate exterior walls, floors or ceilings, can add up to big savings on your heating bill.
  • Much of the energy used for washing clothes is for heating the water. There are two ways to reduce the amount of energy used for washing clothes - use less water and use cooler water. Your clothes will be just as clean as using warm or hot water and you'll save money by not heating water to wash clothes.
