Solve the Air Leak Mystery with a Blower Door Test
Air leaks can cause a multitude of problems: high energy bills, cold drafts, health and moisture problems and indoor air pollution. Air leakage can account for as much as 20% of the heating/cooling loss in your home. The blower door test, a free service from Greenville Utilities, is a quick, effective method of determining the sources and amounts of costly air leaks in your home.
Q: How does the Blower Door Test work?
A: The portable blower door intensifies air leaks about 20 times more than normal by pressurizing or de-pressurizing the building. A powerful fan is placed temporarily in an external doorway. The fan draws air out of the house creating a partial vacuum inside. The lowered indoor air pressure causes outdoor air to flow into the house (20 times more than normal) through all the unsealed cracks and openings. During the test, even the smallest leaks are easy to feel with just your hands. By using a leak detection device, such as a smoke pencil, leaks can be easily identified.
