FAQs
Where does the water go when it goes down the drain?
If you are on a sewer system, all of the drains in your house are connected to a single pipe that leads to the street.  The pipe in the street collects the wastewater from all the homes in your area and takes it to a larger pipe that collects water from other streets. The wastewater then flows in to still bigger pipes that connect various neighborhoods. All the wastewater goes to the Wastewater Treatment Plant where it is treated and cleaned so that it can be put back into the Tar River without harming it.

Is it okay to pour grease down my drain?
No. Disposing of grease improperly can cause sewer spills, which are messy and bad for the environment.  Click here to learn more about how to avoid sewer spills.

If I have a plumbing problem, who should I call first, GUC or a plumber?
If you are a Greenville Utilities customer and you have a problem in your sewer service, make sure to have a plumber check your system before you call GUC. If the plumber determines that your lines are clear, and the problem is in GUC’s portion of the service, please contact us at 252-551-1551 and we will clear our line. The plumber should not attempt to repair the problem in our line. We will reimburse you a reasonable amount for the cost of the plumber determining that  the problem is in our line. We cannot reimburse you for the cost of the plumber clearing our line.  Remember to call us at 252-551-1551, and we’ll do the repairs on our portion of the service. Even if you’re not concerned about reimbursement, please call us about any problem in our lines so we can better serve you.
