I Think I May Have A Natural Gas Leak. How Can I Be Sure?
Natural gas has no odor of its own. A harmless chemical that has a “rotten egg” odor is added so that you can quickly detect even the smallest amount of escaped gas. We have scratch and sniff cards available so you can be sure to recognize the odor. If you’d like one, call 252-329-2199.
If you smell a strong odor of natural gas in or near your home, you should immediately call GUC at 551-1567 or 752-5627. If possible, call from another location, such as a neighbor's home, and do not re-enter your home until a GUC representative has advised you that you can do so safely. Also remember: do not turn lights or other electrical appliances on or off, or use matches.
GUC maintains staff around the clock in order to provide immediate response to emergencies such as natural gas leaks.
Is Natural Gas Available In My Neighborhood?
GUC’s natural gas system is constantly growing. To find out if it’s available in your neighborhood, call 252-551-1587.
How Do I Apply for Natural Gas Service?
If you’re a residential customer interested in having natural gas service, your first step is to call 252-551-1587 to find out if natural gas is available in your area. If it is, your next step is to fill out an application with Customer Service located in our Main Office, 401 South Greene Street, or the GUC Express Office at 509 SE Greenville Blvd.
Once the application is complete, a Customer Service Representative will assist you in setting up an appointment at your house with a Gas Engineering Assistant. Normally, the appointment will be scheduled within two days of the time you filled out your application.
When I Apply for Natural Gas, Do I Have to Pay a Fee?
Yes. A summary of fees is as follows:
To install a residential service with 100 feet of gas line (beginning at the property line), the fee will be $125.00. For any lines over 100 feet, there will be an additional fee of $2.00 per foot for gas lines less than 1" in diameter, $4.00 per foot for lines 1-1/4" in diameter, $5.00 per foot for lines 2" in diameter and $7.84 per foot for gas lines 4" or greater.
In addition to the installation fee, there is a fee to set the meter and turn on the gas of $45 (April through October) or $65 (November through March). If the fee is paid at the time you apply for service, the meter will be installed at the same time your service lines are being installed. For a complete summary of all fees, click here.
If I Want Gas Logs, a Gas Furnace, Gas Water Heater, etc., Who Should I Contact to Install the Appliances? Does GUC Do that Type of Work?
No, GUC does not install gas appliances. We do recommend that you contact a licensed contractor who is qualified to work on gas equipment. Check your Yellow Pages for listings. Your contractor can help you determine whether you need a two-pound or 7-inch metering system. GUC will need that information when you apply for service.
Will GUC Locate My Gas Meter Where I Want Them To?
Greenville Utilities will work with you to determine the best location for the meter. While we will attempt to locate the meter in the most convenient location for you, we will be unable to install the meter in any of the following locations:
- Inside fenced areas or areas that are not accessible to GUC employees
- More than three feet beyond the back corner of the house
- Anywhere the meter would be subject to damage
- Adjacent to carports
- Within three feet of openings in buildings — including crawl spaces, windows and doors
- Within three feet of any ignition source — including electrical connections, electric meters and furnaces
- Where vehicles may travel or be parked
Is An Inspection Required?
Yes. An inspection certificate is required for all new gas house piping BEFORE gas can be turned on. If you live in the City of Greenville, contact the City’s Building Inspection Office at 252-329-4466. If you live in the County, contact the Pitt County Inspection Office at 252-830-6352.
When Should I Contact the NC One-Call Center?
If you are planning to dig on your property, call the North Carolina One-Call Center at 1-800-632-4949 at least two working days in advance to find out if there are underground lines you need to avoid.
